Daisy Corkill has spent all her life living above the local fishmongers and greengrocers in Market Street. But she’s never discovered who her parents were – nor why they left her to be brought up by the couple she now calls Uncle Ern and “Auntie” Glad. Despite her close relationship with Brenda, her very beautiful older sister, Daisy yearns for a family of her own.
It’s Brenda, however, who, in 1919, gets married first – to local businessman Gil Fox. But Gil is not quite the man he appears. While happiness eludes Brenda, Daisy hopes her dreams are about to come true. Ellis – Gil’s kind and dependable brother, a survivor of WW1 – falls in love with her. Will marriage and a family of her own make her happy? And are they enough to get her through stormy times ahead?
