Bernice Rubens was born in Wales and later read English at the University of Wales, of which she is now a fellow. Her writing career began when she was thirty, and around the same time she started work in the film industry. Alternating between writing and film making she has concentrated on writing for the last decade. Her novel 'The Elected Member' was the winner of the 1970 Booker Prize.
