Alan Paton was born in South Africa in 1903. He spent ten years as a schoolteacher and a further thirteen as a Principal, before embarking upon a full-time writing career. Founder and President of the Liberal Party of South Africa from 1958-68 and Honorary President of the South African National Union of Students since 1969, he is a recipient of numerous humanitarian awards including the International League for Human Rights Prize in 1977.
