Before becoming a full-time writer, Val McDermid was a journalist for 16 years, the last three as Northern Bureau Chief of a national Sunday tabloid. She has written more than 10 novels, one of which, 'The Mermaids Singing', introducing clinical psychologist Tony Hill, won the 1995 Crime Writer’s Association Gold Dagger Award for Best Crime Novel of the Year.
