Michael Pearce grew up in the (then) Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, amid the various social tensions that he draws upon for his Mamur Zapt series. He returned there later to teach, and retains an interest in human rights in the area. He was awarded the Crime Writers' Association's prestigious Last Laugh Award for funniest crime novel of the year for The Mamur Zapt and The Spoils of Egypt. He now lives in London.
