Terry Waite was born in Cheshire in 1939. On leaving college he began a career in international aid and development, living and working in Africa and Europe. In 1987, while negotiating for the release of Western Hostages in Lebanon, he was taken captive himself and held hostage for 1,760 days. Since his release, he has been in constant demand as a lecturer, writer and broadcaster. He is a founder member of the Romany Society.
