Derek brock was born in Cardiff in 1927. After leaving the Great Western Railway as a mainline fireman in 1953, described in 'Small Coal and Smoke Rings', he set out on a sales career and also met Sylvia, whom he later married. Her father, a country innkeeper, introduced him to the “trade”, and after successfully sitting the Licensed Trade Diploma, Derek took over the Six Bells Inn at Penmark on his father-in-law’s retirement from 1965 until 1969. Derek and Sylvia now live in Barry just a few miles away on the edge of the Vale of Glamorgan. They have two daughters and a son.
