Author A-Z > E.F. Benson
Born on July 24th 1867, Edward Frederic Benson, or Fred as he is better known to his fans, became the most prolific of the much published Benson family, with more than 100 novels, short stories, biographies and memoirs to his name. Benson is perhaps best known for his social comedies, most notably the Lucia series, published between 1920 and 1939, Dodo (1893), Paying Guests (1929) and Secret Lives 1930), though he is also highly regarded for his Ghost Stories and for his biographies, particularly that of Charlotte Bronte. Benson lived for much of his later life in Rye, East Sussex, of which he was three times elected Mayor. Rye provided the inspiration for Tilling, the setting for many of the Lucia stories. Benson died, of throat cancer, in London on February 29th 1940, shortly after turning in his last book for publication, the aptly named collection of memoirs Final Edition.
