Brian Callison was born in Manchester in 1934. He was educated in the High School of Dundee before entering the merchant navy in 1950, sailing mainly cargo liners to the Far East and Australia. He also served several years in the Territorial Army, and now maintains an active connection with the sea as an officer in the Royal Navy Auxiliary Service.
