Joan Brady was born in California and danced with the New York City Ballet in her 20s, which became the subject of her highly-acclaimed autobiography The Unmaking of a Dancer. Her novel Death comes for Peter Pan was longlisted for the Orange Prize, and with Theory of War she became the first woman to win the Whitbread Book of the Year. She now lives in Oxford.
