The story is told by Priscilla Eversleigh, daughter of Arabella, narrator of Lament for a Lost Lover. From the days of her early childhood Priscilla was aware of her father's indifference towards her and has grown bitterly resentful of this. She is surprised, therefore, when he goes to great lengths to secure her a governess, although she is quick to realise there is something mysterious about Christobel Connalt. Soon, the arrival of a fugitive whose life is in danger affects the whole course of her life and leads to an Venetian adventure - and the birth of Carlotta.
When Priscilla's father becomes involved in Monmouth's rebellion and is about to become a victim of the notorious Judge Jeffries, the opportunity is given her by the sadistic Beau Granville to save her father's life at great cost to herself. Beau Granville is to haunt Priscilla for years to come, threatening to ruin her marriage to the man she loves, as well as the future of Carlotta, the love-child, one of richest heiresses in the country. The tension steadily rises, leading inevitably to murder . . .
