Synopsis
The third volume of the Malone Trilogy
When Tansy Malone first looks into the eyes of Tom Wolf, she is swept by a love that is “like fire of sun and glow of moon”. But their ways seem fated to part, for Wolf is a half-breed Indian returning to his father’s tribe, and Tansy has an elderly husband and a delicate sister, with whom she is setting out for the New World. A variety of experiences and a host of characters lie ahead, as Tansy travels along the Sacramento Trail towards California. People like Amelia Wetherby hastening to her husband; Ma Perkins, who never quite made it to the altar; and Yellow Dan, the friendly squaw; Jem Wilkins the wagonmaster; Mace, who kills to prove himself a man; Bible Billy, the wandering preacher; and Cal Ransom, who hunts for gold in a town called Foxglove. Moving from the decks of a crowded immigrant ship to the endless plains which stretch towards Fort Laramie, so Tansy moves from the unthinking passions of a girl to full maturity, and finds, at last, her true destiny.
