Synopsis
The Remarkable Christmas Truce of 1914
Only a few months into the First World War, the brutal stalemate of trench warfare had set in. But as Christmas approached, Germans, British, Belgians and French laid down their arms and united in spontaneous mutual celebration of the festival. For a brief, blissful time a world war stopped.
Through letters, diaries and unit reports, Weintraub has recreated this remarkable moment in history. Soldiers lit candles, decorated Christmas trees and sang carols. From both sides, troops ventured into No Man’s Land to exchange gifts and food, smoke, drink and even play football.
Although the soldiers adamantly defied orders, the truce eventually dissolved as unavoidable pressure from above forced the men to re-start history’s most horrific war.
