Synopsis
Writer Kate Ivory has new neighbours. On one side lives Jeremy Wells, a diffident, charming Oxford academic, on the other Laura and Edward Foster, intent on enjoying every minute of their retirement. None of them seems likely to become embroiled in serious crime, nor to be its victim. So when the Fosters are shot in what looks like a contract killing, it looks like a case of mistaken identity.But while Kate tries to hold herself aloof. Jeremy's behaviour is oddly irrational. First he leaves dubious messages on Kate's answering machine, then he asks her to take a mysterious package to his colleague at Bartlemas College. And when he insists Kate help him to go into hiding, it becomes clear there's more to Jeremy Wells than meets the eye.
