General Fiction
Synopsis
Modest, reliable and decorous throughout his life, George Bland faces retirement with uncertainty compounded by the early death of his friend, Putnam, condemning him to unwonted solitude. Yet this, too, is brusquely overturned by the appearance of the invasive and mercenary Katy Gibb. Her manner is mercurial: by turns a sulky girl sulphurous sophisticate; and her designs are unquestionably financial, but to George she offers a last chance to abandon discretion and responsibility. Already he has visions of a form of rakish patronage, a hotel balcony in some far off place, the sun sinking, the lightweight suit and the panama hat, perhaps a cigar . . . In the desperate conflict of wills that follows, George discovers his true capacity for compromise and self-deception.
