Synopsis
The first volume of Lavinia Derwent's classic memoir
Lavinia Derwent's border reminiscences, so lovingly displayed in four delightful previous autobiographies, continue with a wry, nostalgic account of her life as 'Lady of the Manse', a young girl having to minister to her brother the Minister. Young girls - especially those brought up on a farm - aren't usually expected to act as 'Lady of the Manse' - but when Lavinia Derwent's elder brother Henry took up a Ministry in Berwickshire, she was suddenly catapulted into a startlingly different world. Part skivvy, part genteel lady mixing with the local aristocracy, Lavinia finds herself at one moment running like a hare along passages trying to solve the problem of being in two places at once, with her hands covered in flour and conscious of the soup boiling over on the range - and at the next, having to be President of the Women's Guild. Whether she is entertaining the Brethren of the local kirk, supporting 'Wee Wullie' and his sister 'Oor Net' or placating the local mad major, Lavinia kept both her head and her sense of humour, and the result is a feast of nostalgic humour for the rest of us.

Herring on the Nile - L. C. Tyler
In an effort to rejuvenate his flagging career, novelist Ethelred Tressider embarks on a "research trip" to Egypt. No sooner has the cruise on the Nile begun, however, than events quickly unravel: an attempt is made on Ethelred's life; the boat's engine explodes, and a passenger is found murdered. As the boat drifts out of control, suspicion falls on everyone aboard - including Ethelred.
