General Fiction
Synopsis
It is the year of the Queen's Coronation and Joanna, Kate and Poll are living in a London suburb with their mother and stepfather, Boyd, the local doctor.Accepting unquestioningly his unstinting love, they are incurious about their vanished natural father - but the safety of their lives is tenuous. The past arrives to upset the present in the person of Aunt Hat, a gossipy old friend who brings news from a different world of chaos and drama.
Perfectly balancing laughter and pain, Nina Bawden combines a touching family portrait with the lively evocation of a small community.

Herring on the Nile - L. C. Tyler
In an effort to rejuvenate his flagging career, novelist Ethelred Tressider embarks on a "research trip" to Egypt. No sooner has the cruise on the Nile begun, however, than events quickly unravel: an attempt is made on Ethelred's life; the boat's engine explodes, and a passenger is found murdered. As the boat drifts out of control, suspicion falls on everyone aboard - including Ethelred.
