War
Synopsis
Life, love and death in wartime England
The evacuation of Dunkirk saw the British rising to a challenge – but now the soldiers walk the streets of Dover, wandering through Woolworths, taking turns on the ice rink. Somehow, life must go on and people take comfort where they can. Fighter pilot Toby Hendy is awaiting orders when he meets a young Frenchwoman. Their affair feels like a summer idyll, but can it withstand the forces of war? Paul Instow, reserve naval commander, feels too old to be called up. A tender, happy relationship with a prostitute distracts him – but is their love simply born out of desperation? Chronicling the lives and loves of ordinary people, Thomas conveys besieged Britain in tense, but curiously elated days.
